Eastern Cape department of health commemorated women’s day in style by bringing services nearer to the people.
"Stand up and be counted" was the message resonated by the department of health in celebrating women’s day in Mt Ayliff on August the 9th 2008. MEC for Health Ms Pemmy Majodina in addressing the carnival has reiterated that gone are the days when women used to be perceived as the weaker sex. She pleaded with women not to be apologetic when dealing and confronting destitutions
“We urge women to be robust and vigorous and disallow anyone or anything standing your way, make every day as a women’s day,” implored the MEC. Out of 316 people scanned on the day, 160 were examined for minor ailments including blood pressure and blood sugar. And 103 for tuberculosis (TB) In the 53 examined for Voluntary Counseling and Testing (VCT) 4 were diagnosed HIV positive.
Mzimvubu LSA manager Dumisani Magadla says the more enthusiastic people can be the quicker problems can be solved. “We are pleased with the positive turn up, it shows that people are willing to participate in problems solving mechanisms,” he added. Among dignitaries graced the day were, Premier for Eastern Cape Mr. Mbulelo Sogoni, MEC’s for government departments, municipal speakers, local municipalities, and municipal mayors and women leaders.
