Our History
On the 7th September 1881 the hospital to be named “Frere hospital” after the Right honourable Sir Henry Bartled Edward Frere,Governor of the Cape Colony from 1877 to 1880. In those days East London had a handful of doctors - today we have 206, of whom 96 are general practitioners, 29 specialists and 81 on the free hospital staff. By 1895 the hospital comprised 26 beds and 8 wards. By 1933 the total beddage was 202. At present the average lenght of stay in hospital is 10 days, and the number of beds in use are 910.The personnel on the staff of Frere hospital numbers 2 643.
