Background

Lilitha College of Nursing has been established through Education and Training of Nurses and Midwives Act 4 of 2003. Inception of the college was in April 2004. It has got five (5) main campuses i.e. Lusikisiki, Mthatha, East London, Queenstown, and Port Lizabeth Campuses and thirteen satellite campuses (13) i.e. St Patricks, Rietvlei, Nessie Knight, St Luyc's, Madwaleni, All Saint's, St Barnabas, Butterworth, Tafalofefe, Nompumelelo, Victoria, Glen Grey, and Umlamli.

The main campuses are offering the 4 year Diploma and Post basic programmes and satellite campuses are offering post Post Registration programme i.e. Bridging course, Diploma in Midwifery and sub professional programmes (Enrolled Nursing and Enrolled Nursing Auxiliaries. The college has created a pool of nurses for the ECDoH from the mentioned programmes and almost 100% of trained students are retained into the health service of the DoH.

The vision of the is towards having a unified, dynamic, competative nursing education institution producing best competent nurses. Training provided to be of high quality relevant and sensitive to the needs of the communities using the community based education and problem based learning as teaching strategies, emphasising primary health care approach.

The first college graduation ceremony was in 2005. 737 graduants received their Diplomas in different college programmes.
