The Eastern Cape Department of Health was established in 1994 when a new South African Democratic Government was elected on 27 April 1994. The department merged with the department of Welfare to form the Department of Health and Welfare.After July 1999 election, the two departments were separated into two Health Department and Welfare Department respectively.
